Hubcap Grill - Burgers and Fries
Memorial Day is all about grilling and burgers! While I wasn’t in a grilling mood myself, I asked Eater Houston for their recommendation. Their list of 17 Essential Houston Burger Joints placed Hubcap Grill as number one. So off I went to try an essential joint’s burger.
While I’m not sure I would list them as number one in Houston (we are a large city with many fantastic burger choices), it was a good burger. I also ordered the cheese fries…because I loooove cheese fries! Growing up in Houston and raised on the original James Coney Island in the 1970s and 1980s, cheese fries are in my blood. The Hubcap Grill cheese fries are not as amazing as the JCI ones with processed cheese squirted on top of golden-delicious French fries, but it is the same idea. And that made me happy.
My dining companion and I shared the double meat cheeseburger. It was a substantial burger. Not the most giant patties ever, but definitely not the wimpiest either. The cheese was nicely melted, and the mustard, ketchup, and pickles provided the perfect tangy, sweet balance. The bun was moist and complemented well. The burger was very satisfying, and I was very full at the end!
I once heard you can judge a good burger based on the messiness level. This burger was messy for me! So, that may add some bonus points to my thoughts.
I love the atmosphere of Hubcap Grill in The Heights. While there is an option to dine inside, the covered patio in front just jives well with a “burger joint.” The eatery is super casual – customers order at the outside counter and pick up their food in the same place. The restaurant has a jukebox which is such a lively addition. Who does not love a jukebox?
While I may not jump back to Hubcap Grill the next time I crave a burger (as I mentioned, we have so many excellent options in H-Town), I like Hubcap Grill. The server taking my order was THE nicest man ever. More bonus points!
