The best seat in Houston - Pappas Bros. Steakhouse

Best seat in the house - Chef's Counter at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse

If you ask me about my favorite restaurant, I will answer Pappas Bros. Steakhouse on Westheimer 99% of the time. And the best place to sit – the Chef's Counter.

It's a perfect date spot. It is intimate for close conversation with your dining companion, yet you have the entertainment of watching the kitchen.

I love the choreography of the kitchen. It's a dance that, when done in synchronicity, all components hum in perfect harmony. I love seeing the fish cooked, the tomahawk steak ready to be served, and the baked potatoes dressed with precision. Each baked potato order is unique, and all night I rarely saw two potato orders precisely the same. Who knew there were so many variations on baked potato orders?!

While sitting at the counter and observing the kitchen is the best spot in the house, the service, drinks, and food make the night a perfect date location or any occasion location. We all know the steaks at Pappas are top-notch but do other menu items measure up? Well, of course, they do, starting with the warm sourdough bread and cold, soft butter!

My favorite side is the Au Gratin Potatoes. I would take their cheesy, creamy, dreamy Au Gratin Potatoes over queso and chips any day. The best deal is to order off the Bar Menu (two steak options, a little smaller portions, and a little more cost-efficient). The bar items come with a side of mashed potatoes, but you can sub that out for any side – including the thick, rich, perfectly made Au Gratin Potatoes.

Then, there is dessert. One of my favorite desserts in all of humanity is their Moon Pie. It has a different name these days, but all you need to know is Moon Pie. This decadence entails a chocolate mousse with marshmallows intertwined, a fudge sauce oozing down from the top with crunchy pieces, and a homemade marshmallow worn like a crown. The plate is satisfying but not too rich. It's a perfect ending to a perfect evening at Pappas Bros. Chef's Counter.
